Field Visit Adds a Positivity to Society

‘Nurturing professionals with a Difference’ is the motto of XISS Ranchi, and it makes sure that this is fulfilled by engaging us in social service fieldwork. This is the best way of sensitizing the future generation managers to the needs and hopes of the poor and oppressed. It helps us realize the importance of masses and not just being concerned with our own success at the cost of others.

The Human Resource Department has the social service field work as a compulsory part of its curriculum and is not just as add on. There are various kinds of centres where we visit according to our ability to contribute maximum. This year we have seven centres- Cheshire Home, Ranibagan; Gurunanak Home; Braja kishore netrahin balika vidyalaya; M.M.K high school; St. Michael School, Bahubazar; St. Xavier School and Govt. Middle school, Hindpiri. Students go to these centres three days in a week for 2 hours. We go there not only to teach, but to add values to the little children. We go there not only to help the management of those centres but to spread happiness among those who don’t have much to be happy about! We go to our respective centres on every special occasion too to celebrate with the people there. Be it Independence Day, children’s’ day, Diwali or Eid we go to our centres and celebrate with them. And it in those moments that we realise that we too have become as much important in their lives as they have become to ours’.

Our facilitator Prof. Dr. Shyamal Gomes always keeps a close watch at everything we do and follows up from time to time to make sure that what we are doing,  we learn a great deal from it along with contributing to the society as much as we can.

Celebrating our festivals with them do two major things- firstly they make the people in those centres feel that there is someone out there waiting to meet and greet them and they are not alone and secondly, it made us realise that there is happiness outside our own family and friends circle too. For instance, the latest Diwali festival celebrated by the HRM part I students along with the centre people was a very happy affair. Decorating the centres, distributing sweets and bursting crackers with them made them as well as us equally happy and made us reflect on how the little efforts of ours can bring so much joy in other peoples’ lives. And it stays on with us for long. Many of our seniors are still in touch with their field work, visit the centres whenever they can and always feel a close bond with their respective centres.

Along with our efforts and help of Prof. Shayamal Gomez we are guided by Mr. Binod Thakur. Under the banner of “joyful learning” we are taught how to overcome the problems faced by us at the centre and the correct ways to overcome them.

This social service field work is what makes the pass outs of Xavier Institute of Social Service, Ranchi, Professionals with a Difference!
