In Focus: Mr. Rohit Kumar
(Batch of 2011-13)
How has been your journey till now from classroom to
corporate?
I started my journey
with FES (Foundation of Ecological Security) and my location was Sojat. I was
working in harsh conditions at the grassroots. It was productive and I was
using all my skills and learning in the field. Those experiences from the field, later on, helped me to groom myself and
I was able to pursue the greater
opportunity. Those field works had paid well and today I’m working with Shree
and looking over its CSR activities. My target is to deliver more and more in
the coming years.
What was the difference
you observed between CSR and NGO? What will you suggest to your youngsters?
The difference is only
of attitude. Both work for the community,
for betterment and upliftment but the attitude and the working style changes.
In one place you have to report to a government
body, project officers on others to your seniors at the management level. For
development professionals like us, we are
bound to work in remote interior areas. Dreaming of working in metro cities may
not be fulfilled early in your career.
We all came to this
crossroad of CSR or NGO but I will suggest my youngsters to self-navigate. Seek questions to yourself where
you want to work. Where your heart lies and what strengths you posses and how will that help you in climbing
the ladder.
What are your memories from rural camp?
Rural Camp is the first
exposure you get. There are lots of memories let me share one. I was in K.K.
Bhagat sir camp and when our group was not fully prepared for presentation
session then we used to switch off the light and pull off the power socket so
that the presentation could not take place. Bhagat sir use to call off the
presentation to next morning but that never use to happen.
It is a mega event of
XISS, a colourful three-day extravaganza
where you get an opportunity to showcase your extracurricular activities. Enjoy
those moments since those moments won’t come back in life after entering the
corporate world. Even today I miss panache.
Who was your favourite faculty?
Dr Niranjan Sahoo has always been my favourite faculty.
I’m fan of him. I thank him for his guidance and his suggestions. He was my SIP
guide and I was also in his Study Tour Group which somewhere down the line
helped me in nurturing as a budding professional. His motivational lessons have
helped me a lot throughout my college days and will be doing so in future too. I feel overwhelmed with his generosity
and kindness.
Where you use to hangout
in Ranchi any memories?
Ranchi is a beautiful
city with a soothing climate. We often use to visit nearby water falls. There were several falls we use to
visit like “Dasham” and others. Apart
from falls, we use to hangout near the girl's hostel for evening tea. We also use to hangout in malls although Ranchi didn’t have
that many malls as it posses today. In
college me and my friends generally, use
to hangout in the canteen. Those were the day,
you made me nostalgic.
Any memories related to the classroom?
Most of us use to panic
to give a presentation, especially in
Himadri sir class. In our time chit system was used to decide which group will
present first. Those were difficult presentations. In Sant sir class I remember
we use to make the sound of cow, goat and
buffalos and Sant sir use to ask where is a cow
in the class.
Any memories related to your SIP?
My Summer Internship
Project (SIP) was an intensive learning. I have done my SIP in Semi Govt.
organisation “Uttar Pradesh Bhoomi Sudhar
Nigam”– Lucknow where I was working on topic “Sodic Land Reclamation and on Farm Development”. It involved a
rigorous field work where we have to travel a lot. In 60 days we roamed around
30 cities of Uttar Pradesh. For youngsters I will suggest giving your best in SIP as most of the questions at
Placement time will be from this only.
What message would you like to give to your juniors?
Work hard, concentrate
more on your field works and improve your documentation part. Have respect for
your faculty and don’t disobey their instructions. Make a habit of working on
their suggestion that is important for your development and proliferation. Read
as much as you can and explore new ideas. Innovation in the social sector is the need of the hour and you
all could be those innovators.
At last, would
you like to add something?
Well, it can’t be denied that I miss those days and today
whatever I’m XISS has played a big role in that. I would like to thank my Alma mater. Keep doing the good work.
