Aspirations. Hopes. These are the usual feelings that one experiences while moving towards a new beginning. We all recently welcomed a new year which is usually bordered with the start of a new chapter and a scope of improvement, either by way of burning out our vices or incorporating more virtues within ourselves or better still, indulging ourselves in a little bit of both in order to build a better version of ourselves. And what better way to begin a new phase of exuberance and optimism than to give way to the spirit of sportsmanship and team work. After all, collective efforts are the best way to take a step closer towards the dreams we have been chasing and wanting to convert into reality for a long long time, which for some people could imply a majority of their life. No one ever reached the heights of success standing alone and one-man armies, more often than not, fail to achieve success in their endeavors.

In the light of this, XISS is organizing a Basketball Tournament for boys and girls of all departments from both batches from 10^th-14^th January, 2018. Come, cheer for your team and provide them with the motivation they need to sail through and attain the victory they deserve, in return for all the hard work they have put in by devoting their heart, soul and blood in the practices which will help them move towards the coveted trophy.

A graduate in Botany stepped foot in the Xavier Institute of Social Service on 18^th of June 2016. Given the background of her education she was in great dilemma whether she’ll be able to bag a job on campus or will be thrown out of the selection procedures for the afore mentioned reason. But none the less she stared her 2yr long journey with a determination to stay on top of her class and show to all how serious she was about her decision of choosing XISS as a launch pad for her career in corporate. With time came the placement season and after clearing her psychometric test of Tata Steel she sat for her GD/PI. The interview was short which made her nervous if it meant bad, but the results came and she got through along with 2 of her classmates. 

The Big day was celebrated along with the “Diwali Celebration” at her Social Service Field Work Centre which made it all the more special. That nervous botany graduate was me, Tulika Sneha of HRM 2016-18.

            My experience of working at Tata Steel for 2months was splendid. It was a work full of challenges which I already expected since TSL gave us live projects. The guidance of my mentors, my hard work and the blessings of my parents and professors finally paid off when on 18^th August 2017 I received the mail of being offered the PPO. I couldn’t be happier and I know now that this is the place where anyone can make a fresh start to a happy new journey in the corporate world. And today I stand at a place where I can give a few tips to the juniors- 

*You will not be judged on your educational background so it doesn’t matter if you have a B.Sc or B.A or B.Tech degree, just be through with your subject matter, Past as well as Present one.

*Be confident in the interview, the length of your PI is not proportionate to its quality.

Also work with all your might in your SIP, these two months will give you a lot to learn. All the best to the juniors for their summer placements as well as the second year for their final placements.

XISS Professor at UN Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction in Mexico

Dr. Niranjan Sahoo, Professor of Disaster Management at XISS represented India at United Nation's International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) which has its Head Quarter in Geneva, Switzerland organized The Global Platform 2017 on Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun city, Mexico from 22-26 May 2017. The chief objective of this biennial global forum was to resolve the policy on disaster risk reduction in the entire world. Around 1000 Ministerial and subject matter delegations from more than 200 countries took part in this forum. Dr. Niranjan Sahoo, Associate Professor of Rural Management at Xavier Institute of Social Service was one among a few Indian delegations along with Mr. Kiren Rijuju, Union Minister of Home Affairs Dr. P.K Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India and Mr. Kamal Kishore, IAS, the Member of National Disaster Management Authority

Dr. Sahoo presented his official statement on the issue i.e. psychological behavior of the community people during onset of the cyclones in India. He has put forward a policy suggestion to establish Disaster Ministry in every country in the world. Dr. Sahoo also paid an official visit to the Disaster Rescue Center of Mexican Air Force base to get an exposure on disaster rescue mechanism where he was welcomed by the Mexican Air Force. He has been again invited to take part in the similar Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2019. Dr. Niranjan Sahoo, had also delivered a few lectures on Disaster Management to the staff and trainees of Korean Fire Safety Institute and Disaster Management Center in South Korea on 11th of May last year. He also visited various Korean Universities like Han Seo University, Sinhan University, Ansan University, University of Suwon in South Korea and delivered lectures on Indian Education System and Disaster Management in some of the Universities during his visit to South Korea from 1st of May to 15th of May 2016.

Someone has said it true that time flies, it’s been one year and we haven’t noticed it yet. We have come so far and a lot is yet to be done. Last year, approximately this time, we were breathing in the fresh air of XISS, trying to imagine what the coming years have in its kitty for us. There was happiness, excitement and curiosity on our faces, and in our spirits too. Today after a year, when we look around, on the corridors, inside the cafeteria, people bustling around. We feel like our feelings from a year before has transformed into seventy-five new faces. Finally, the time has arrived to welcome the new batch officially on the fresher’s day. The baton has to be passed on and that too in style.

En Masse the official fresher’s day celebration of rural management at XISS was held on 14^th July 2017. The programme started with the innovative way of watering the saplings by the dignitaries. Followed by the greetings and welcome speech of Fr. Satish Augustine a student of rural management second year. Then the HOD of Rural Management Department Dr Prof M H Ansari gave the message to follow your heart. He said “Doing what you like is freedom and liking what you do is happiness. This celebration is the offer of acceptance to the new batch in the XISS family. Later on Fr. Xavier Soreng interacted with the new faces of the rural management department and while interacting he said that “The year ahead is going to be very colourful for you all. You may have a joyful experience of learning. I hope you all be able to leave your fingerprints on the XISS history.

The cultural programme started with welcome dance by Runjhun, Sheetal and Puja in the late evening. The theme for the freshers was “Rain”. The ambience in the auditorium was colourful with the beautiful attires and the glittering faces of boys and girls. There were few phenomenal dance performances. The audience went mellifluous by the melodious song is sung by the students.

Of the entire act, Rural Management Official Band stole the show with their rocking performance. The most attractive event of the evening was the ramp walk by the first year students.  They showed casing different states with their dresses. After a couple of rounds of ramp walk, top eight pairs were selected. These pairs went through question answer rounds which were the concluding round. Finally, Ashit Benjamin Lakra and Sumeira Abid were declared as Mr and Mrs Fresher. First runner up male and female title went to Sourav Mothey and Ananya Basha. Apart from these, there was also a prize for best attire and most popular face. Best Attire Male and Female went to Sangram Deshmukh and Shikha Kashyap. The Most Popular Face in male went to Sachin Nitesh Khalkho and for female went to Khayati Pandey. This extravaganza of beautiful performances came to an end with a gala dinner.
