A Journey from Botany to HRM.

A Journey from Botany to HRM.

"There is no pause to success, when you get determined"
Ms. Tulika Sneha, XISS Batch - 2016-2018, shares her experience on bagging a PPO from Tata Steel

A graduate in Botany stepped foot in the Xavier Institute of Social Service on 18th of June 2016. Given the background of her education she was in great dilemma whether she’ll be able to bag a job on campus or will be thrown out of the selection procedures for the afore mentioned reason. But none the less she stared her 2yr long journey with a determination to stay on top of her class and show to all how serious she was about her decision of choosing XISS as a launch pad for her career in corporate. With time came the placement season and after clearing her psychometric test of Tata Steel she sat for her GD/PI. The interview was short which made her nervous if it meant bad, but the results came and she got through along with 2 of her classmates.
The Big day was celebrated along with the “Diwali Celebration” at her Social Service Field Work Centre which made it all the more special. That nervous botany graduate was me, Tulika Sneha of HRM 2016-18.

My experience of working at Tata Steel for 2months was splendid. It was a work full of challenges which I already expected since TSL gave us live projects. The guidance of my mentors, my hard work and the blessings of my parents and professors finally paid off when on 18th August 2017 I received the mail of being offered the PPO. I couldn’t be happier and I know now that this is the place where anyone can make a fresh start to a happy new journey in the corporate world. And today I stand at a place where I can give a few tips to the juniors-

*You will not be judged on your educational background so it doesn’t matter if you have a B.Sc or B.A or B.Tech degree, just be through with your subject matter, Past as well as Present one.

*Be confident in the interview, the length of your PI is not proportionate to its quality.

Also work with all your might in your SIP, these two months will give you a lot to learn. All the best to the juniors for their summer placements as well as the second year for their final placements.

XISS Ranchi: How it feels.

XISS Ranchi: How it feels.
'It is the experiences which you know will stick to you forever that define the person you are bound to be.'

by Ms. Anoushka Kumar
Department of Human Resource Management (2017-2019)

I still remember how nervous and excited I was as I set out for my journey from college in the small town of Tuljapur to Mumbai to give my interview for admission in the Human Resource Management course of Xavier's Institute of Social Service. I had already made up my mind that this was the one and only course I wanted to pursue at master's level and though I had already given interviews and been selected in a number of colleges, this was one of my top two colleges. The reason behind this was that my objective at the end of two years was not only to get into a top-ranked organization which would help me earn well and swiftly climb up the corporate ladder. I also wanted to acquire the skills which would help me understand the people I work with and serve them to the best of my ability. Coming from a social science background, I knew what apathy is caused to people when they could not even meet their basic needs despite working to the best of their ability. XISS is the only institute which offered me a chance to practice both without compromising on either. The short introduction session we had with the HODs of all departments and two of the alumni before our interview and group discussion only helped in further strengthening my belief in the Institute as one which truly does create professionals with a difference.

Another factor which makes XISS special is the high level of discipline imparted here. It is not only focused on giving the students an understanding of the management theories but, in preparing them for life out there, be it professional or personal. So everything is taken into account-from the way you dress and communicate (both verbal and non-verbal communication) to your sleeping habits and the manner you conduct yourself in the hostel. Though it may seem a bit tedious initially, eventually you will accept the grill as a way of life. And fear not, your seniors (both present and alumnus) and professors are always open to any questions you may have and always have an abundance of advice to give!

The professors try to make the classes as interactive as possible by asking students to explain concepts with the help of examples at regular intervals of the teaching sessions. In addition, besides sharing their own experiences to make the subject matter more clear, they also encourage students from different backgrounds to give their own relevant examples related to what is being taught in class so as to have a healthy discussion and help boost both their understanding and confidence. Again, in the classroom the focus is not only on theoretical teaching but on an overall development. So there are a whole range of activities to improve communication skills as well. These include debates, presentations, speeches (both extempore and with preparations) and group discussions.

There are also myriad opportunities for practical exposure in order to give the students a true sense of what this field consists of. Two of the main ones are the Social Service Field Work and Summer Internship Program. In the former, students are divided into seven groups and allotted different centres wherein they have to engage with students who are slightly less advantaged in some way or the other. This helps in building of the quality of compassion. The summer internship program, on the other hand is an opportunity to associate with an organization and do an empirical study in the topic of one’s choice. In addition to this, there are also industrial field visits in three main cities of Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi.

Talents besides those related to the field are also given full recognition here. There are auditions for everything from singing to ramp walk (and be-ware our professors are not only experts in the managerial fields; they have a host of hidden talents which helps them identify a star in the crowd). And once you’re in, you’re there for the long haul. There will be no dearth of events for you to showcase your talent so you better know how to balance your academics and ECAs before choosing the club of your choice!

Last but definitely not the least, Ranchi is a beautiful city with amazing weather (truly a heaven for those who enjoy lots of rains) and a whole lot of scenic places to visit whenever you get time out from everything mentioned above.

The XISS Difference

Because XISS “Nurtures Professionals, with a Difference.”

"Luck is like lift , hard work are like stairs. Lift may fail sometime but stairs always take you to the top" . This is not just a mere quote, it is the reality in which everyone should live. For me, joining XISS was like an achievement that was a result of my dedication, perseverance and hard work along with the support of my parents and Gurus.

Joining a B-School is regarded as a cult phenomenon these days and as a BBA graduate, it was dream to join a Top B-School with unparalleled legacy, so the best was XISS to match my dream. Just like everyone has a dream institute, XISS was just like the one which I really wanted to study at. The journey to XISS was like a fairy-tale bliss for me. The excitement, enthusiasm and anxiety cannot be just translated into normal permutation or combination of words. From the filling of the Application Form, practising Group Discussions, interview preparations - every step was like a step towards a golden future.

I still remember there were  many groups created on WhatsApp and Telegram for practising Group discussion specific to XISS. I used be an active member of those groups too. The groups also consisted of several distinguished XISS alumni from the industry who helped the young aspirants for achieving better results. As the day for interview arrived, the excitement turned into nervousness, the zeal turned into a kind of some numbness but at last – all’s well that ends well. Finally when I saw my name in the Merit List of Department of Marketing, I was over the moon. It was a feeling that had great proportions of happiness, joy and I felt my future was secured to a great extent for me. Keeping the notion of success as a journey and not a destination, I then decided upon to carry this to become a successful manager in future and serve my organisation with the best of my efforts.

I had a great experience on the very first day at XISS. The speeches delivered by the faculty members of XISS and alumni were filled with motivation and key insights. The guest speakers too inspired me to become a successful person – professionally as well as personally.

I always have believed that talent does not exist, we are all people with equal potential. It's all about hard work and doing it best and right.
What I experienced in 7 days of my time at XISS and what inspired me the most is that XISS grills students’ minds and hearts, to such an extent that we automatically deliver the best. We have been given the best conducive environment to learn, practice and apply, along with dynamic competition. I hope when I finish my course at XISS, I will emerge with the ‘difference’ in me which XISS talks about and yes, I’m sure of it because XISS “Nurtures Professionals, with a Difference.”
